Per a NEW training requirement issued by the Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC)ALL faculty and staff working under an IACUC animal use protocol, regardless of handling laboratory animals, are required to complete “ULAM-60000 Orientation for Animal Care & Use Refresher” in MLearning. This brief online course provides an overview of animal research oversight, standards, regulations, institutional policies, and expectations for our animal research community.

The only faculty or staff who will be exempt from taking the course are those who completed “ULAM-10000 Orientation for Animal Care & Use” after May 1, 2015.

Individuals will be notified by email with training DUE as follows:

Group Deadline
  Principal Investigators (Last Name A - M) July 15, 2016
  Principal Investigators (Last Name N - Z) August 19, 2016
  Staff (Last Name A - I) September 18, 2016
  Staff (Last Name J - R) October 18, 2016
  Staff (Last Name S - Z) November 19, 2016

To complete your training:

  • Know your deadline. All training deadlines are listed above.
  • Allow 30-60 minutes for course completion.
  • Log in to MLearning (https://trainingportal.med.umich.edu). You will find the online course in your Learning Plan. Additional MLearning instructions are available here. Note to managers: in the upper left corner next to the MLearning logo, switch from the “My Team” icon to the “Me” icon to see your own Learning Plan.
  • MLearning requires a level-2 password (UMHS Outlook password). All animal researchers, including non-medical locations, have been given level-2 account access to MLearning.

You are highly encouraged to complete this training early to avoid a possible non-compliance notification.

All faculty and staff should complete this refresher course within 60 days of initial assignment. Staff who do not complete this training course by their assigned deadline will be removed from animal use protocols, and Principal Investigators who do not complete the course may have their protocols suspended. The appropriate PI and/or Chair will be notified of potential non-compliance.

Ensuring that all staff are using best practices is a key component in our ongoing commitment to sustained excellence and compassion in animal care at the University of Michigan. Please feel free to contact the ULAM Training Core with any questions at ulam-trainingcore@umich.edu or (734) 763-8039.
