Review EHS Safety Findings to Protect Your Lab Personnel
Principal Investigators (or their proxies as assigned in eRAM) are required to identify any hazardous materials and operations that may be used as part of their animal use protocol.
Based on the specific details (e.g., species, hazard type, dosage, route of administration) provided by the Study Team, the U-M Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) Department will then review the protocol to:
- Determine occupational health risks,
- Evaluate and recommend proper protective measures,
- Identify any need for special medical monitoring, and
- Assign appropriate housing facilities based on risk assessment.
Once EHS has completed its review, findings are sent via email (see sample message) to the Principal Investigator (PI) or PI Proxy to complete the Accept EHS Safety Findings activity.
Upon acceptance, the EHS Safety Findings are sent to all animal handlers listed on the protocol. Findings are also available under the EHS Safety Findings tab in the eRAM Protocol Workspace.
The information included within EHS Safety Findings may include, but is not limited to:
- Engineering controls required for the preparation and administration of materials
- Proper personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Additional training required
- Waste disposal requirements (e.g., materials containing product, carcasses, bedding)
- Required housing level and duration
Should a change to the dosage, frequency, or administration route of a hazardous substance to an animal occur, a protocol amendment must be submitted. EHS will review the amendment and provide revised safety findings as needed.
Please note that the PI bears ultimate responsibility for ensuring that all personnel receive appropriate lab-specific training, don required PPE, and adhere to all applicable safety procedures. Protect the individuals in your lab – including students – who work with animals by sharing the information from EHS Safety Findings on a regular basis.
