World map showing networking and collaborationsInternational collaborations contribute to academic excellence by advancing research and scholarship efforts across campus. The University of Michigan (U-M) is committed to supporting and fostering these activities with the utmost integrity, transparency, and trust. That commitment includes full compliance with the relevant regulations and guidelines that accompany federal funding.

Amid growing federal concerns regarding “foreign influence” on academic research, several federal agencies have issued statements emphasizing the need for increased transparency around activities that may unduly influence research or research results.

As these agencies further develop their guidelines for the required disclosure of international research collaboration and activity, U-M encourages its research community to continue following best practices to ensure successful research collaborations with international partners.

Where to Learn More

It is important to note that disclosures of international collaborations can occur in multiple areas of research and scholarship activity. If you are unsure about whether or not to report an activity with a foreign component, please review the university’s International Research Activity Guidance for the most common scenarios.

The U-M Office of Research has also created an International Research and Scholarship Guidance webpage with current information and resources for international research and scholarship activities, including reporting for grants, conflicts of interest and commitment, travel guidelines, and more.

Please continue to monitor this page for the most up-to-date information and guidance on conducting international research.
