Animal housing locations and laboratories across the University of Michigan campus

Checklist and clock iconThe Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC) will begin its next round of semi-annual facility inspections on Tuesday, February 6. Inspections will run through the end of March and include any animal rooms, surgical suite support spaces, and areas where procedures are conducted on animals.

Inspection schedules and reminders are sent to each PI/Study Team member based on the buildings/rooms they are assigned to as outlined on animal use protocol(s) in eRAM. Inspection notices and reminders are automatically sent by eRAM at 2-week and 4-day intervals leading up to the assigned inspection date.

When reviewing the inspection schedule, please note that inspection time frames are approximate. Each inspection will start with SPF and animal housing areas, though this may be altered if there are contaminations. The following also applies:

  • For ULAM housing locations, only ULAM husbandry supervisors and IACUC inspectors will inspect
  • For approved housing outside the vivarium, the facility manager or PI are required to be present with IACUC inspectors
  • For laboratory areas where live vertebrate animals are used, having a lab representative present for the inspection is highly recommended
  • During facility inspections, inspectors must be provided access to locked cabinets, drawers, and storage areas that store drugs and medical materials

Prior to your inspection, we encourage you to download and review our Are You Inspection Ready? Checklist and share it with your staff. The checklist can be used as a self-evaluation tool to make sure that your laboratory is prepared for its upcoming inspection. It also contains important information about recurring deficiency trends to help you focus on specific areas of concern.

Please direct any questions or concerns about semi-annual inspections to the Animal Care & Use Office at or (734) 763-8028.
