Our Program has developed a Quick Reference Sheet – available on the Animal Care A-Z website – to provide basic information about the care and use of animals at the University, including important information about:

  • Personnel requirements for working with animals,
  • How to work safely in and around animal facilities,
  • How to report animal welfare concerns, and
  • How to obtain veterinary care.

This sheet should be reviewed by all observers and short-term personnel, as defined by the Policy on the Classification and Expectations of Personnel Involved with Animal Activities. This includes individuals who are in a classroom where any animal(s) covered under an IACUC approved protocol may be present.

As outlined in the policy, observers may not handle animals and short-term personnel must work with animals under the supervision of ULAM personnel, the Principal Investigator, or another trained individual on the approved animal use protocol.

Questions about adding short-term personnel to an IACUC approved protocol should be directed to your Research Compliance Associate in the Animal Care & Use Office.
