Rates
Per-diem rates for animal care, or direct charges for personnel costs and supplies, are based on the cost analysis and recovery procedures outlined in the National Institutes of Health (NIH)’s Cost Analysis and Rate Setting Manual for Animal Research Facilities.
Rates for Select ULAM Services Extended Through September 30, 2026
Rates for select Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine (ULAM) service areas will be extended through September 30, 2026, to allow for additional data collection and routine financial analysis. New rates will be shared via email and on the website as soon as they become available.
Providing veterinary care to all animals used at the University of Michigan, the Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine (ULAM) offers the entire U-M community economical, efficient, and specialized services that promote scientific advancements while upholding the highest animal welfare standards.
ULAM’s shared services, equipment, resources, and expertise are provided on a fee-for-service basis (usually in the form of a recharge rate).
Fees are billed monthly to departmental and/or investigator accounts, and are often associated with the purchase of animals and supplies, daily care of animals, technical assistance, and specialized research support services.
The University’s Enterprise Financial Planning & Analysis Office reviews and approves rates on an annual basis.
Rates for animal husbandry care include items such as purchase of animals and supplies, daily care of animals, and technical assistance.
