As the veterinary and animal care providers for all animal use protocols at the University of Michigan (U-M), the Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine (ULAM) takes great pride in its service, partnership, and support of the U-M research community.

View the list of revised per-diem rates that have been reviewed and approved by the University’s Financial Analysis Office.

ULAM rates are evaluated on an individual case-by-case basis to determine appropriate cost recovery, consistent with the NIH’s Cost Analysis and Rate Setting Manual for Animal Research Facilities.

Rates will continue to be re-evaluated on an annual basis coinciding with the end of each calendar year.

We understand that even the smallest rate fluctuation can have substantial implications for your research. Please know that the entire ULAM team remains committed to employing various fiscal management controls and improving our operating efficiencies wherever possible to help mitigate rate changes and any subsequent impacts on the U-M research community.

While we strive to minimize future rate adjustments, you are strongly encouraged to follow standard best practices for baseline budgeting, which allow for incremental cost changes throughout multi-year grant projects.

You may also wish to review the Quick Reference Sheet on Understanding ULAM Per-Diem Rates, which provides a breakdown of the types of husbandry and veterinary technician services covered by ULAM’s standard per-diem rates.
