Profile

As the Managing Director of Husbandry Operations, Carrie provides leadership and operational continuity for campus-wide animal housing areas, as well as management of the supporting animal care and use staff that serve the University of Michigan scientific research community.

She also works in collaboration with critical support entities including facilities, security services, occupational health, and the Department of Environment, Health & Safety, to ensure that Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine (ULAM) operations and buildings meet or exceed a level of excellence that is aligned with full AAALAC accreditation.

Professional Background

Prior to joining ULAM as an Animal Care Technician in 1997, Ms. Childs-Thor served as a zookeeper at the Detroit Zoo where she created the diets for a diverse group of zoo animals. Before this, she volunteered and worked with several local veterinary clinics, including the Huron Valley Humane Society.

Ms. Childs-Thor graduated from the Institute for Laboratory Animal Managers, a two-year professional development program. Her professional affiliations include serving on, and chairing, a multitude of national American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) committees.
