ULAM Pathology Core

The Pathology Core, run by the Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine (ULAM), is a recharge-based research pathology laboratory providing anatomic and clinical pathology services to the U-M research community, including diagnostic support for U-M’s veterinary care program.

Sample Submission Deadlines for the Winter 2024 Holiday Season

The ULAM Pathology Core will be closed beginning at 12:00 PM (noon) on Tuesday, December 24, 2024 โ€“ Wednesday, January 1, 2025, for U-M’s holiday season days.

To allow sufficient time before the break to process samples to a stable stage, histology samples must be received by 4:00 PM on Tuesday, December 17. Hematology/chemistry/send-outs must be received by 12:00 PM on Friday, December 20.

Oversight is provided by board-certified, veterinary pathologists with extensive experience in research pathology. Technical staff have certification and/or experience in histology or animal health related fields. Only projects utilizing animal tissues or de-identified (research only) human tissues are supported. Quality assurance is maintained through the use of internal SOPs and participation in an externally administered quality assurance program.

The ULAM Pathology Core provides only pathology-based services. For technical assistance with live animal procedures, please see the ULAM Technical Services team.

ULAM Pathology Core Missions: Research & Diagnostic Support

  • Research submissions: ULAM Pathology Core research support services are available on a recharge basis by direct submission to ULAM Pathology Core. Recharge rates are approved by the University and are based upon cost-recovery. Estimates and letters of support are available and pre-project consultation is encouraged. See Service Areas below for available services, rates, and submission instructions.
  • Animal Diagnostic submissions: ULAM Pathology Core also provides diagnostic pathology services to the veterinary care program. These services are for the identification of unanticipated animal illnesses and are not recharged to the investigator. Results are provided to the researcher, but diagnostic pathology reports are not intended to provide controlled research data. Diagnostic pathology services are available by contacting the ULAM Veterinary Care Team.
  • Our main laboratory is located on the ground floor of B36 in the North Campus Research Complex (NCRC) and our satellite facility is in the MSAB building on the Medical Campus. Samples may be dropped off/picked up by appointment at either location with daily sample courier service between the campuses.
