The unscheduled inspection program, led by the U-M Department of Environment, Health and Safety (EHS), was put on hold in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
With laboratory research activity returning to pre-pandemic levels, EHS has now resumed this program.
What You Should Know
- Visits are intended to be brief and nondisruptive
- Will focus on easily identifiable safety-related issues such as:
- Not wearing appropriate PPE
- Food or drink in the lab
- Improper chemical labeling/storage
- Not targeted toward animal spaces in the vivarium, but will include labs that may use animals in their research
- Conducted by trained interns under the guidance of EHS representatives
Following each visit, Principal Investigators will receive a report that is similar to a regular EHS Inspection Report. Identified deficiencies contained within this report should be corrected as quickly as possible.
