Effective May 25: Updated Format for NIH Data Management & Sharing Plans

In late February, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced that there is an updated list of elements that should be included in an NIH Data Management & Sharing Plan (DMS Plan).

The new format requires less information overall and also includes:

  • Five yes/no questions,
  • A table to list the types of data that will be generated by the project, and
  • A repository where that data could be shared.

This new guidance replaces the previous six DMS Plan elements which required longer responses to: Data Type; Related Tools, Software and/or Code; Standards; Data Preservation, Access, and Associated Timelines; Access, Distribution, or Reuse Considerations; and Oversight of Data Management and Sharing.

The new list of DMS Plan elements is effective for NIH grant applications with a due date on or after May 25, 2026. After this date, researchers will be required to use the NIH’s new DMS Plan Format Page.

The U-M Library will be hosting a virtual workshop on Wednesday, May 6, from 10:00 AM – 10:50 AM for members of the U-M research community to learn more about the updated requirements for writing an NIH DMS Plan.

Please note that advanced registration is required to receive the Zoom login information.
