New ULAM Per-Diem Rates Go Into Effect January 1, 2024

As the animal care providers for all research and educational activities at the U-M, the entire Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine (ULAM) team takes great pride in its service and support of the U-M research community. In the spirit of this important partnership, we remind you of upcoming changes to ULAM’s husbandry per-diem rates.

These rates will go into effect on January 1, 2024, and have been reviewed and approved by the University’s Enterprise Financial Planning & Analysis Office.

Please note that select names have also been modified to more accurately reflect their usage (e.g., Mouse – Small has been renamed Mouse – Static, Rat – Small is now Rat – Static). These changes are outlined in greater detail on the Rates section of the website.

In accordance with federal and institutional expectations, and consistent with the guidance set forth by the National Institutes of Health (NIH)’s Cost Analysis and Rate Setting Manual for Animal Research Facilities, all rates are evaluated on an individual, case-by-case basis at least annually to allow for direct cost recovery.

We know that any changes to per-diem rates can have substantial impacts on grant budgets and project planning. While the ULAM Team continually strives to prevent rate fluctuation through improved operating efficiencies and various fiscal management controls, Study Teams are strongly encouraged to plan for incremental cost changes of between 3% – 5% per year when preparing budgets for animal activities on sponsored projects.
