Effective January 1, 2025: Revised ULAM Husbandry Per-Diem Rates

Husbandry ULAM

Service and integrity are paramount to the Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine’s (ULAM) partnership and support of the U-M research community. In the interest of this service-oriented mission, we remind you of recent changes to ULAM’s per-diem rates, which went into effect January 1, 2025.

These changes are outlined in greater detail on the Rates section of the website and via PDF download through February 14, 2025.

Study Teams should expect to see the revised rates reflected on their month-end billing statements available for viewing in eRAM by approximately February 1, 2025.

In accordance with federal and institutional expectations, and consistent with the guidance set forth by the NIH’s Cost Analysis and Rate Setting Manual for Animal Research Facilities, the University’s Enterprise Financial Planning & Analysis Office evaluates ULAM rates on an individual case-by-case basis at least annually to allow for direct cost recovery.

We understand that even the smallest rate fluctuation can have a substantial impact on your research. While the ULAM Team continues to employ various fiscal management controls and improve operating efficiencies to minimize future rate adjustments, Study Teams are strongly encouraged to follow standard best practices for baseline budgeting, which allow for incremental cost changes of between 3% – 5% for animal activities on multi-year sponsored grant projects.
