The Office of the Vice President for Research recognized the Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine’s (ULAM) Lisa Steiner, BS, CMAR, RLATG, with the Excellence in Research Safety Staff Recognition Award during a formal awards ceremony at the Michigan League on Thursday, May 14.
As Animal Safety Coordinator, Lisa serves as the liaison between the Animal Care & Use Program and the Department of Environment, Health & Safety. In this role, she ensures safe work practices across the Program, from containment housing procedures to appropriate sharps disposal. Lisa also leads the campus-wide sanitation validation program, making sure any equipment that comes into contact with animals is appropriately sanitized.
Lisa’s experience also includes 11 years as a ULAM Husbandry Supervisor, three years as an Animal Technician, and 14 years as Secretary for the Michigan Branch of the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).
“Lisa has transformed the Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine’s approach to safety by bridging the gap between administrative compliance and active lab operations. By cultivating relationships with both PIs and research staff, she has moved our unit away from a “checklist” mentality toward a proactive safety partnership,” said Brooke Pallas, DVM, DACLAM, ULAM Faculty Veterinarian and Clinical Associate Professor of Laboratory Animal Medicine. “[She] has become a vital part of ensuring that University safety policies are translated into practical, sustainable workflows for our research teams.”
Congratulations, Lisa, your contributions to animal and staff safety are an integral part of our Program!
