Personal vehicle and public transportation prohibited icon

To ensure animal health and welfare and minimize exposure to environmental stressors that may alter study results, transporting live animals in vehicles NOT specifically designed for such purposes (e.g., personal cars or public transportation) is generally NOT permitted.

Transporting animals in personal vehicles is ONLY permissible AFTER the following requirements have been met:

  1. The IACUC approved protocol includes a justification for why transport in such vehicles is necessary,
  2. Any proposed transportation methods have been discussed with a ULAM Faculty Veterinarian, and
  3. The standards outlined by the Procedures for Animal Transportation are adhered to at all times.

Transporting Animals on Public Transportation

Consistent with state and federal regulations, live animals should NEVER be taken on a public transit system, including the U-M Bio Research Shuttle or U-M campus buses.

Questions?

  • Specific questions about procedures for proper animal transport should be directed to your ULAM Faculty Veterinarian. If you don’t know your faculty veterinarian, send an inquiry to [email protected] and your question will be routed appropriately.
  • Detailed instructions for transporting various (non-animal) biological materials to and from campus can be found on the Environment, Health & Safety website.
