Our Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine (ULAM) works in close partnership with the U-M’s Enterprise Financial Planning & Analysis Office (EFP&A) to routinely assess per-diem rates for animal care.

Rates are evaluated on an individual, case-by-case basis at least annually to allow for direct cost recovery (i.e., billing for the personnel and supply charges associated with the provision of daily animal care).

At this time, the Unit is continuing to collect data for routine financial analysis; therefore, this year’s rate review and approval processes have been delayed. As such, all existing per-diem rates for ULAM animal husbandry and housing services will be extended through early 2026.

New rates will be shared via email and on the Rates page of the Animal Care & Use Program website as soon as they become available.

As a reminder, all rates are calculated based upon the procedures outlined in the NIH’s Cost Analysis and Rate Setting Manual for Animal Research Facilities and must be approved by EFP&A prior to implementation.

Per-diem charges are billed monthly in arrears and appear on billing statements in eRAM approximately 30 days after services have been provided.
