Dr. Simmons attended Davidson College, where she first discovered an interest in research. She then became involved with studies examining mitochondrial dynamics in fruit flies and how human land use affects animal activity in rural Tanzania.

After graduation, she completed her veterinary education at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. During that time, she completed a summer research fellowship in the pathogenesis of eosinophilic esophagitis and participated in several externships with animal care and use programs.


Dr. Simmons’ research interests include animal models of autoimmune disease and cardiology.
