In addition to the standard provisions (e.g., food, water, husbandry, housing, and supplies) of daily care each animal receives, the Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine (ULAM) offers a variety of specialized research support services to the U-M research community.
Rates for these select service areas went into effect on October 1, 2026:
- Animal Import & Export
- Animal Purchase Surcharge
- Animal Surgery Operating Rooms
- Germ-Free Mouse Facility
- Husbandry services (e.g., per-diems) for aquatic species (zebrafish and frogs)
- ULAM Pathology Core
- ULAM Technical Services
Study Teams should expect to see the new rates reflected on their month-end billing statements available in eRAM on or after November 1, 2026.
All ULAM rates are calculated based on direct cost-recovery only, and are reviewed and approved on a regular (i.e., at least annual) basis by the U-M Enterprise Financial Planning & Analysis Office. To better assist study teams with budget planning, we anticipate that rate adjustments for the select service areas above will shift from the current October 1 renewal date to the beginning of the calendar year, effective January 1, 2028.
