Update on Nationwide IV Fluid Shortage

As you may be aware, Baxter IV Solutions, a main supplier of Michigan Medicine’s IV products, was heavily impacted by the recent hurricane in North Carolina.

In the coming weeks, it is expected that large volume IV fluids/irrigation ranging from 250mL to 5000mL will be in short supply in human clinical patient settings nationwide. This shortage is expected to last several months.

At this time, we do NOT anticipate a shortage of IV fluids/products labeled for veterinary use.

To assist hospital clinicians with this impending shortage and to avoid potential ordering delays, all research laboratories who may be using IV products labeled for human use are strongly encouraged to switch to products labeled for veterinary purposes only. These products can be obtained from several preferred University of Michigan vendors.

Questions?

If you have questions about product procurement, please contact the ULAM Business Office at [email protected] or (734) 764-0277.

Questions about obtaining veterinary approval for alternative medications and/or routes of drug/fluid administration should be directed to your ULAM Faculty Veterinarian.

Thank you for doing your part to support our colleagues in human medicine as they navigate these supply chain challenges!
