ACUO/ULAM Welcome New Staff Members

In recent months, both the Animal Care & Use Office (ACUO) and the Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine (ULAM) have welcomed several new staff members.

Animal Care & Use Office

  Ashley Duval, AAAS, RLATg  

Ashley Duval, AAAS, RLATg, who previously served as both an Animal Care Supervisor and Animal Technician in ULAM, is now a Research Compliance Associate for Principal Investigators (PIs) with last names beginning M – R.

In her new role with the ACUO, Ashley assists both PIs and lab staff with shepherding their animal use protocols through the eRAM system, provides guidance on how to remain compliant with policies and procedures, and ensures that investigators feel supported in both their research and commitment to the humane and responsible care and use of animals.

 
         
  Michael Ream, LAT, ALAT  

Michael Ream, LAT, ALAT, has transitioned to a new role as Quality Assurance (QA) Specialist with the ACUO Quality Assurance Team. He previously served as a Research Compliance Associate for PIs with last names beginning M – R.

 
         
  Scot Pittman, BS, LATg  

Scot Pittman, BS, LATg, also recently joined the ACUO Quality Assurance Team as a Quality Assurance Specialist. Prior to his role with the ACUO, Scot served as an Animal Care Supervisor and Animal Care Technician with ULAM.

 

 

In their roles as Quality Assurance Specialists, both Mike and Scot are responsible for conducting QA visits with investigators to improve their compliance confidence, identifying impediments to the conduct of sound research, and serving as advocates and educational resource(s) for the U-M research community.

Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine

  Gerette Kerby, BS, CMAR, LATg  

Gerette Kerby, BS, CMAR, LATg, joined ULAM as the new Managing Director of Husbandry Operations in late 2018. In this role, Gerette is responsible for establishing the standards of care for all animals housed on the U-M campus, and for ensuring that campus-wide husbandry practices meet or exceed regulatory standards.

She has been in the laboratory animal medicine field for over 20 years, working for institutions such as the Buck Institute, Genentech, Wayne State University, and Novartis, where she has spent the majority of her career. In addition to a Bachelor of Science, Gerette also has CMAR and LATg certifications and is a Michigan Licensed Veterinary Technician.

 
         
  Jonathan Mikosz, BS  

Jonathan Mikosz, BS, is an Animal Care Supervisor for both Med Sci (I and II) and the Rogel Cancer Center. Prior to joining U-M, Jon served as Director of the African Safari Wildlife Park where he oversaw all of the day-to-day park operations.

As the Director of Collection and Relocation/Transportation Specialist, he was also in charge of all zoo animal transportation, including the transport of animals around the world. Jon graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science in 2016.

 
         
  Amanda Kosnik, BS, RLAT  

Amanda Kosnik, BS, RLAT, is an Animal Care Supervisor in MSRB and has worked at the University since 2012. Prior to her supervising appointment, she held positions as an Animal Technician for ULAM and a Research Lab Specialist in the Department of Pathology.

Amanda holds bachelor’s degrees in Animal Science and Human Biology from Michigan State University.

 
         
  Renee McUmber, BS, RLAT  

Renee McUmber, BS, RLAT, is an Animal Care Supervisor in the LSI/Dental/SPH facilities. She has worked at the University since 2008 and has spent the last six years in the ULAM Breeding Colony.

Renee graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Science in Zoology, with a concentration in Animal Behavior and Neurobiology.

 
         
  Lindsey Allen, BS, RLATg  

Lindsey Allen, BS, RLATg, is an Animal Care Supervisor in NCRC. She has worked at the University since 2005 and spent the last 10 years in the ULAM Breeding Colony as a Breeding Colony Manager.

Lindsey graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 2002.

 
         
  Cory Jacques, RLAT  

Cory Jacques, RLAT, is an Animal Care Supervisor in NCRC. He has worked at the University since 2013, spending time as both an Animal Technician and Animal Technician Lead in ULAM.

Before joining the University, he spent 13 years working in the commercial pet trade, which included the care and breeding of various exotic reptile species.

 

 

ULAM Animal Care Supervisors provide myriad levels of support on a day-to-day basis to the animal technicians, PIs, and laboratory staff who work in their respective animal housing areas.
