Arthur Lupia to Serve as Interim VP for Research and Innovation, Institutional Official for the Animal Care & Use Program

Arthur Lupia, Ph.D., headshotArthur Lupia, PhD, has been appointed interim vice president for research and innovation, effective April 1, 2024. Dr. Lupia will also serve as the Institutional Official (IO) for U-M’s Animal Care & Use Program.

Lupia is currently associate vice president for research, large-scale strategies and is the executive director of Bold Challenges, an initiative that facilitates large-scale research projects.

In his new role, Dr. Lupia will assume overall responsibility for the excellence and integrity of research across U-M’s three campuses and provide oversight to the U-M Office of Research.

About the Role of the Institutional Official

Designated by the University’s president and serving as a representative of senior U-M administration, the IO bears ultimate responsibility for the Animal Care & Use Program, including resource planning and ensuring alignment of program goals with the institution’s mission.

The IO also provides operational oversight for the activities under the associate vice president – animal care and use program and the assistant vice president – animal compliance oversight.

Dr. Lupia succeeds Rebecca Cunningham, who departed the University of Michigan on March 31 to become president at the University of Minnesota.
