The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has announced a new Data Management & Sharing Policy which goes into effect in January. This policy applies to all research funded or conducted, in whole or in part by the NIH, that results in the generation of scientific data.
All grant applications submitted on or after January 25, 2023, must include a Data Management and Sharing Plan (DMS Plan).
A DMS Plan should include the following elements:
- Data Type
- Related Tools, Software, and/or Code
- Standards
- Data Preservation, Access, and Associated Timelines
- Access, Distribution, or Reuse Considerations
- Oversight of Data Management and Sharing
If you work with the NIH to fund your research, it is strongly recommended that you take some time to learn about the new policy.
