The University of Michigan’s eResearch replacement effort continues to move forward, with plans to transition research administration systems to a new platform ahead of the current system’s end of life.

Request for Proposals Underway

The Request for Proposals (RFP) process is underway to evaluate potential vendor partners and solutions for the next generation of eResearch tools – including eResearch Animal Management (eRAM), eResearch Regulatory Management (eRRM), eResearch Proposal Management (eRPM), and M-Inform.

More than 200 U-M leaders and representatives from across the Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint campuses, as well as Michigan Medicine, are participating in vendor presentations and evaluations. Their feedback is a key component the project team will use to assess each proposed solution’s fit for U-M’s research compliance, administrative, and workflow needs.

This fall, selected vendors are expected to participate in hands-on evaluation activities, giving research community members an opportunity to explore finalist systems more closely and provide feedback on usability, functionality, and fit for purpose.

Supporting the Community Through Change

In late April, the current platform vendor announced an extension of support for the existing system(s) from 2031 to 2034. While this provides more flexibility, project sponsors and eResearch leadership have determined that it does not change the university’s overall project direction, anticipated timeline, or continued momentum toward replacement.

The project team recognizes this effort is occurring during a period of significant change across the university. Researchers, administrators, faculty, and staff are being asked to adapt to new processes, systems, and expectations in many areas. With that in mind, the planned phased approach – beginning in 2027 – is intended to support a thoughtful, manageable transition while positioning U-M for long-term success.

The goal is to select and implement a system that not only meets the immediate needs of the university’s research community, but also strengthens the institution’s broader research enterprise. This work will help support continued excellence, resilience, and impact for years to come.

Thank you to the research community for your continued engagement, patience, and expertise throughout this effort.
