December 2, 2021

January 1, 2020 red and white calendar reminder iconAs the veterinary and animal care providers for all animal use protocols at the University of Michigan (U-M), the Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine (ULAM) takes great pride in its service, partnership, and support of the U-M research community. In the spirit of this service-oriented mission, we remind you of upcoming changes to per-diem rates for ULAM husbandry and trucking services, which will go into effect on January 1, 2022.

View the list of revised per-diem rates that have been reviewed and approved by the University’s Financial Analysis Office.

We know that even the smallest rate fluctuations carry important implications for grant budgets, project planning, and, ultimately, your research. ULAM per-diem rates are evaluated on an individual case-by-case basis to determine appropriate cost recovery as outlined by the NIH’s Cost Analysis and Rate Setting Manual for Animal Research Facilities.

Download the Quick Reference Sheet on Understanding ULAM Per-Diem Rates to learn more about the types of husbandry and veterinary technician services that are covered by standard per-diem rates and which services are additional fee-for-service.

While ULAM strives to prevent rate fluctuation through the use of various financial management controls and improvements in operating efficiencies, study teams are strongly encouraged to follow standard best practices for baseline budgeting, which allow for incremental cost changes throughout multi-year grant projects.

Rates will continue to be re-evaluated on an annual basis coinciding with the end of each calendar year.
