The University of Michigan’s next re-accreditation visit by AAALAC, International (AAALAC) will take place this Summer (i.e., June – August 2026).
AAALAC accreditation is critical to both the success of our Animal Care & Use Program and to the larger U-M research enterprise. Full continued accreditation demonstrates to our peers, funding agencies, and the general public that U-M values and upholds the highest standards of compassionate care and humane use of laboratory animals in the conduct of research.
In partnership with U-M Vice President for Research and Innovation & Institutional Official Arthur Lupia, PhD, the Animal Care & Use Program is hosting two AAALAC 2026 Site Visit Kickoff Events
for the U-M research community on Monday, March 23, from 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM in the Biomedical Science Research Building.
The morning will start with a Kickoff Meeting highlighting important programmatic trends and insights as well as expectations for site visit participation and preparation. For convenience, this meeting will also be livestreamed via Zoom webinar (U-M login credentials required). The Kickoff Meeting will be followed by the first-ever Community of Care Fair, a unique opportunity to engage with colleagues from across campus and explore best practices in laboratory animal care and use.
Attendance at either event is strongly encouraged. Also, if your laboratory has a unique approach to enhancing animal care and/or improving operations, please consider sharing your idea as part of the Community of Care Fair. Complete details are available via the AAALAC 2026 Kickoff Events RSVP page. ![]()
Additional information and important news and updates about the site visit will be communicated via email and on the Animal Care & Use Program website
(or paste animalcare.umich.edu/aaalac into your web browser) in the coming weeks and months. *Please note that this page requires valid U-M login credentials to access.
On behalf of our many cross campus partners, we thank you for taking an active role in preparing for this most important site visit and for your continued contributions to a thriving research community that is, above all else, committed to care.
