The pursuit of comparative medicine and basic science research is fundamental to the academic mission of the Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine (ULAM), and to data-driven advancements in animal health and welfare programs.

Likewise, the nurturing of faculty efforts to pursue scholarly projects and answer important research questions is essential to support comparative medicine research within the broader U-M Animal Care & Use Program.

To lead these efforts, Jean Nemzek, DVM, MS, DACVS, has been named the ULAM Assistant Director for Research. The appointment is effective August 15, 2022.

In this newly created position, Dr. Nemzek will develop initiatives to further enhance research opportunities and programs for ULAM faculty, including a five-year strategic plan that emphasizes:

  • Management of the ULAM faculty lab and associated personnel,
  • Mentoring and advocacy for ULAM faculty researchers,
  • Expansion of available resources and support,
  • Oversight of internal research funding resources, and
  • Tracking of programmatic metrics.

She will also collaborate with the directors of ULAM’s Postdoctoral Clinical Training Program and the Refinement & Enrichment Advancements Laboratory to optimize faculty research initiatives in those respective programs and will continue to oversee ULAM’s Animal Surgery Operating Rooms.

Dr. Nemzek received her veterinary degree from the University of Minnesota and is board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Nemzek on this new role, and in thanking her for her continued commitment to fostering scholarship and academic success within ULAM!
